That said, there are some awesome LGBTQ+ anime couples that serve as positive representations of their respective communities. Some of these couples are the main characters in their own gay anime shows, whereas some are featured in series that aren't inherently LGBTQ anime. These couples are a big step in the right direction, each slowly but surely helping to normalize LGBTQ+ romance in anime and breaking away from the problematic tropes of the past.
There were some anime couples out there that represented us is different ways and had the romances that we really wanted. In honor of Sailor Moon Crystal getting green-lit for a fourth season, let’s go back to the anime gay couple, terrifying, and heartbreaking LGBT couples from anime’s past. But here I’d like to take a look at some of my favorite depictions of LGBTQ+ characters in anime.
For convenience’s sake, I’ll be including couples along with individuals when possible.
Ryo Asuka. Anime: Devilman: Crybaby. Ryo Asuka isn’t the most likable character by a long shot. Same-sex relationships have been a part of anime stories for a long time. In most shows, we can find one or two characters of the same sex who are in love with each other. Sometimes their portrayal is quite realistic or interesting while other times they are usually used for comic purposes. Their relationship is interesting to say the least and has a lot of gay overtones, so it has a place on my list.
For the anime gay couple couple, we have Nanami dark hair and Yuu light hair. What I love about this couple is eventually, Ryoma gets over his initial homophobia, and starts to have strong feelings for Izumi.
It takes some time, but eventually Fumi manages to place her romantic feelings with Akira, who has been emotionally supportive all along. I loved how the show gave them their own ending song and sequence. On Ice is yet another series that walks the fine line between BL and mainstream anime. Heaven Official's Blessing is the popular anime adaptation of the donghua of the same name.
Kaworu actually listens to Shinji discuss his loneliness and uncertainty, showing genuine understanding and concern for him in a way that no one else has ever done. Nobody in the world of the anime cares that there's a anime gay couple relationship happening around them - it's just happening. The relationship between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is heartfelt and emotional, and they form a very strong bond as they journey together.
This show boast two couples, the anime gay couple one being my most favorite, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune Hakura and Michiru. It was almost as if they were saying incest was better than being two girls in love. As he gets to know Mafuyu, he realizes that not only does Mafuyu have an excellent reason for wanting to play that guitar in particular, he's also a brilliant singer. Yu isn't happy to hear this, since it means that she no longer has someone to relate to.
Miyano is a devoted fan of BL manga, but it's all just a fantasy, right? Thank you so much for reading! I love how bonded the two girls are— not only sexually, but also on a deep, emotional and mental level. Sign me up. Nezumi and Shion come from very different worlds. Likewise, the relationship between protagonist Shuichi Shindo and Eiri Yuki is one of the first major BL romances and helped popularize future titles.
It follows Hikaru Kusakabe and Rihito Sajoutwo boys who start getting to know each other when Sajou needs help practicing for their school's chorus festival. Like Loading Nevertheless, it plays home to one of the genre's most celebrated couples, Yuri Katsuki and Victor Nikiforov. When Mafuyu and Ritsuka first meet, it's because Mafuyu is weirdly insistant that Ritsuka teach him how to play an expensive guitar. That's exactly what happens in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.
Usagi eventually realizes that he was wrong in several ways at the start of the relationship, and has a serious discussion with Misaki about it. But despite these anime gay couple stakes, he refuses to leave him, and the two become an unstoppable pair. Can the two of them weather these changes and start their relationship over?
Given the manga is aimed at young children, this is especially heartening. It is now June and Pride Month! When he realizes the truth, Ryouma's feelings only seem to get stronger, and he has to come to terms with them and what they mean for the both of them.
