Involved, Invisible, Ignored: The Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Parents and Their Children in Our Nation’s K Schools is the first comprehensive report on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) families’ experiences in education. Families headed by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender parents are often invisible in or underserved by the school systems.

Millions of children in the United States have lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender (LGBT) parents. Some children of LGBT parents were conceived in heterosexual marriages or relationships. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) families pose a contemporary challenge to these values for parental engagement in schooling. Historically, LGBTQ families are a new possibility, and educational systems are often un-prepared to engage with parents in these families (Bower & Klecka, ).

Current estimates indicate that there are more than 7 million lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) parents with school-age children in the United States, yet little is known about the experiences of this growing number of LGBT-headed families in schools across the country. When asked about times parents felt the school was inclusive or not inclusive of their family structure, parents often reported small moments with teachers, administrators, parents, or their child's classmates as notable moments, such as teacher's allowing time for their child to make an extra Mother's Day card, another parent stating that she was "excited to meet your partner", or an example of non-inclusiveness when a teacher who ignored a child calling a female parent a "dad".
